A Macclesfield care home has been named a finalist for a Life Story and Reminiscence Award after a year of activities celebrating the experiences of a 104-year-old resident.
Prestbury House says its work with Jim Collorick, a Second World War Royal Navy veteran, has helped bring together his family, fellow residents and the local armed forces community.
According to the home, Jim served as a radio operator and telegraphist aboard HMS Hesperus. Staff have used his memories and connections with the Royal Navy to help keep his life story part of everyday activities at the home.
When Jim turned 104, his family, local veterans and representatives from the Royal Navy and Royal British Legion joined the celebrations. The home says he also received a handwritten letter from an admiral recognising his service.
The award recognises activities which take time to understand residents as individuals and bring their experiences into life at a care home.
Tracy Cumberbatch, activities lead at Prestbury House, said: “To see Jim surrounded by his family, fellow veterans and members of the armed forces community on his 104th birthday was incredibly special.”
She said the team was delighted that the award recognised the importance of keeping stories like Jim’s alive.
Prestbury House is part of Porthaven Care Homes. Its team is now looking ahead to the awards ceremony on 22 January 2027.
The home has been shortlisted as a finalist; the award winner has not yet been announced.
