Work to upgrade Macclesfield Station on the West Coast Main Line will be delayed by six months, Avanti West Coast has confirmed. The £2 million redevelopment began in November 2025 and was originally due to be completed in spring, but the operator now says work will not finish until autumn.
The upgrade includes improvements to the station entrance, a new ticket office, a new waiting room, a retail unit, and toilets. Automatic numberplate recognition technology will also be introduced for the station car park.
Local Reaction
Richard Slater, managing director of Henbury Travel travel agents in Macclesfield town centre, said the delay is disappointing. "People want to get a drink or buy a newspaper but there's nowhere to get refreshments, so it is very disappointing that the gateway to the town is being disrupted," he said. "We're sending people on holidays using rail and the delay is disappointing because there's not a reason for it to take so long to upgrade the station."
Ellen Haslam, 71, who has lived in Macclesfield all her life and uses the station three times a week, said: "I use Macclesfield station three times a week and you can't get refreshments because this work is going on."
Passenger Numbers
Almost 1.5 million passengers used Macclesfield station in 2024/25. There were 1,486,408 entries and exits at the station during that period, a 10 per cent increase on the previous year.
